Blanc Gay & Associates: finance and strategy serving Enterprise IT transformation
Founded in 2022 by Alexandre Gay, Blanc Gay & Associates (BG&A) is an independent consulting firm specializing in comprehensive IT transformation, integrating financial management and digital business strategy at the heart of business cases.
Alexandre Gay, you are the founder and Managing Director of Blanc Gay & Associates (BG&A). Can you explain how your independent IT consulting firm came to be?
Alexandre Gay (BG&A): We have made a surprising observation about the technology transformation market, which is highly fragmented. There are financial management experts, IT consultants, and strategy firms, but rarely a firm capable of combining these three areas of expertise into a single, coherent approach. We fill this gap by offering tailored support that takes into account IT needs, budgetary constraints, and strategic vision. Blanc Gay & Associates, an IT transformation and financial strategy consulting firm, supports CIOs and CFOs in the design and implementation of their digital and budgetary transformation projects. Our model reconciles global business challenges with pragmatic and consistent service.
So it is this cross-functional approach—strategy, budget management, and IT transformation—that sets BG&A apart from its competitors?
Alexandre Gay (BG&A): Our mission is to act as true translators between IT, strategy, and finance. We are involved throughout the entire IT transformation cycle, unlike strategy firms that stop providing support after the business case, or others that have a highly specialized financial approach but are less comfortable discussing IT with the IT department.
What best defines the approach of the independent firm Blanc Gay & Associates in providing tailored support to CIOs undergoing IT transformation?
Alexandre Gay (BG&A): The firm is small (fewer than 10 employees), which guarantees personalized monitoring of IT projects and a single point of contact for each client. We are based in Geneva, Switzerland, and Berlin, Germany, but also have a presence in the French market in Paris and the British market in London. We therefore support our clients and their subsidiaries in French, English, and German. Our niche expertise is based on in-depth internal knowledge of strategic and financial IT management. What also sets us apart is our great flexibility—which explains our tailor-made IT transformation support—and our “value first” approach as an independent firm, which means that we work entirely in the interests of each client, constantly seeking ROI.
What specific IT strategy services does BG&A offer to CIOs and Heads of IT in companies?
Alexandre Gay (BG&A): Blanc Gay & Associates is involved in the entire IT cycle:
one-off projects (IT audits, cloud feasibility analyses),
transformation or migration programs (move-to-cloud, move-to-agile),
and operations (exploitation and financial optimization).
Our services cover the rigorous construction of business cases (new IT projects, investments, optimizations), IT controlling, commercial management of RFPs (targeting cloud partners or ERP integrators, for example), and supplier negotiations. We facilitate internal dialogue between the purchasing, finance, and IT departments, right up to the pitch to management.
The underlying objective remains effective IT financial management, based on strategic governance and sustainable IT cost optimization, in order to enable the IT department to maximize value creation and ROI. BG&A regularly shares its insights on IT transformation and financial optimization with CIOs, CFOs, and IT performance managers in order to support companies in their strategic decisions.
Do you have an example of a move-to-agile business case led by BG&A?
Alexandre Gay (BG&A): I'm thinking of a strategic IT project that didn't initially include the financial aspect. The goal was to increase the flexibility of the IT department and improve its collaboration with the business to create more value through a move to agile.
However, the board demanded a measurable budget reduction and quantification of the value of the redeployment of resources.
How did your independent IT financial management firm conduct this move-to-agile business case?
Alexandre Gay (BG&A): We worked closely with the finance department to ensure that budget cuts were achieved. We designed a comprehensive framework for analyzing reinvested human and financial capital, which was tested throughout the organization and then put into production. We then provided ongoing management support, helping to overcome any obstacles to the implementation of the framework. Until the project was successfully completed, we reported to the CTO and CFO.
Is your technical approach also tailored, like the personalized support offered by BG&A, to optimize a company's costs?
Alexandre Gay (BG&A): Sometimes, it's not so much about spending less, but spending better. We step in to identify budget cuts, prevent potential future costs, or maximize the added value of the capital invested by the IT department. As specialists in IT financial optimization, Blanc Gay & Associates distinguishes between IT projects aimed at budget reduction, cost avoidance, and ROI maximization. The approach and KPIs will therefore differ slightly depending on the type of budget optimization considered.
Could you give us an example of a cloud or move-to-cloud business case this time, with significant financial optimization as a result?
Alexandre Gay (BG&A): I'm thinking of a very urgent digital project (one-month deadline). Microsoft changed its pricing and terms of service for customers, which had a significant impact on the company.
In this cloud business case too, BG&A provided technical support and strategic advice in addition to cost optimization?
Alexandre Gay (BG&A): Exactly. Together with the IT department, we conducted a major study to specify IT requirements. At the same time, we assessed the associated and indirect costs based on several questions and scenarios: should we reserve cloud instances in Europe? In the United States? For one year? Or for how long? An in-depth analysis of the scenarios was carried out to anticipate each impact of the cloud transformation, as part of a strategic cloud vision for the next 1 to 3 years. We provided guidance and advice to the client in its negotiations with Microsoft, and also participated in the purchasing and compliance process. In the end, the client was able to achieve savings of nearly 25%.
How would you summarize the Blanc Gay & Associates method?
Alexandre Gay (BG&A): Flexibility, availability, and tailored IT consulting combining technological transformation, budget optimization, and strategic vision. A comprehensive, independent, and pragmatic IT consulting firm focused on consistent, sustainable IT transformation that creates value across the entire company.
